Smartqua – An Automatic Fish Feeder Technology

[Smartqua device and its creator, Bibita Habibi Mustafa]

Have or are you currently raising a fish but often forget to give food the fish on time? This problem is not rarely experienced by fish owners especially new owners. To solve this problem, a technology created by an Indonesian student can be the solution, the Smartqua.

Smartqua is a device created by student form UIN Sunan Kalijaga Jogjakarta in Indonesia, Bibita Habibi Mustafa. By using Smartqua, fish owner who use aquarium can feed their fish anytime the want as long as they have internet connection in their phone.

There are 4 things that the Smartqua can do, they are:

  1. Monitoring water acidity level (pH)
  2. Monitoring water temperature
  3. Scheduling fish feeding session
  4. Feeding fish manually

From those list of things Smartqua can do, you can see that there are other features beside feeding fish automatically. This is a must because aside from feeding fish regularly, in raising a fish you also need to monitor the water acidity level (pH) and water temperature because some type of fishs can’t survive in high pH water.

Smartqua will send notification to the fish owner to change the water when the water’s pH level or temperature is exceed a certain level to keep the water in normal condition.

For the automatic fish feeding in Smartqua when the time entered the scheduled time configured before hand, Smartqua will automatically release fish foods into the aquarium. The release process will continue for a few seconds and will automatically stop after a scheduled time.

To do its function, Smartqua use 2 sensors to detect water acidity level and temperature. To control the fish feeding, it use an electric valve component. Also, the device use Intel Galileo to process data from sensor and control the electric valve and Intel XDK for the application development.

Technically, how Smartqua works is as follows:

  1. The sensor and electric valve component is connected and send data to Intel Galileo.
  2. The data then send to server by Intel Galileo via internet to be processed.
  3. If for example the pH data exceeds the normal level, server will send notification to the aquarium owner via the Smartqua application that is installed in the owner phone.

To create this Smartqua device, Bibita needs a relatively short time that is 3 weeks. The device has been successfully demonstrated in Intel Innovation Day 2015 in Jakarta a while ago and many event audience shows interest with the device.
